The Bainbridge Kiwanis awarded Mike Derzon the Educator of the Year Award on June 12. Both Mike and the school received $500 checks from the Kiwanis. Some of us think the best part is that Mike got to ride in the Grand Old Fourth parade down Winslow Way! Mike is the first independent school teacher to receive the award. We couldn’t be prouder to see him recognized for excellent teaching of our children and community.

Derzon says that what’s kept him at The Island School for the last 15 years is the individual attention that each student receives at the school, academically and socially.

“We are able to think about really teaching what’s most important for each individual kid. One of the main features is that we look at both their academics, as well as who they are as individuals, and what specific things they need to be the best them they can be,” Derzon says.
