Our Mission

At The Island School we educate each of our children; we nourish their innate curiosity, inspire a lifelong enthusiasm for learning, and foster respect and appreciation for themselves and others.

Dear Families and Friends of The Island School,

Greeting enthusiastic learners each morning really makes my day. The children of The Island School are curious students who are confident in their abilities, yet appreciative of others.

So, why do kids eagerly arrive at The Island School every day? Our staff, families and community believe:

Kids flourish in a community where they are known and loved. At The Island School we are intentionally small, developing an extended family where each member of the community feels a responsibility to help others (whether an adult or child) to be the best version of themselves. A new student recently told me that his favorite part of The Island School is that “It feels safe to be myself and safe to admit you’re wrong.”
Kids learn best by feeling, thinking and doing. Learning occurs in many different places and in many different ways at The Island School - in classrooms, hallways, recess, field trips, Breakfast Club, Extended Day, Cultural Study, Market Day, Monday Morning Sing and the list goes on.
Kids are naturally filled with wonder and creativity that we celebrate. At The Island School our staff cultivates and elevates student inquiry so kids ask questions and discover the world around them. Students are challenged to create team egg drop containers from recyclables and fashion race cars for our Science Fair. Frequent field trips to museums, live theater, salmon hatcheries and historical sites expand students’ world views.
Kids feel a sense of purpose when they build connections with the community. We empower kids to take action on their passions and interests. Read on to learn about the Ometepe Kids Can Make a Difference calendar project.
Kids need time to play. We continue to provide two recesses every day for children to run and play, imagine and create.

Your generosity provides innovative learning experiences to our students who become compassionate, curious graduates who love learning. What a gift! Together we are supporting the next generation of creative, caring citizens who will undoubtedly positively change our world in big and small ways.

Gratefully,

2018 - 2019 Success Story

Students Explore the Bigger World

Our second and fifth graders worked together to create the Kids Can Make a Difference Calendar 2019 to support communities on Bainbridge Island’s sister island of Ometepe, Nicaragua.

success_calendar_cover
success_calendar_sales1

First, volunteers with Bainbridge Ometepe Sister Islands Association (BOSIA) shared stories of the islands’ long relationship with each other.

Then, students researched landmarks that make each island special, formed cross-grade teams, drew the illustrations and chose relevant facts to share.

The students traveled to Kent, WA to observe the printing process firsthand, before selling calendars on the sidewalks of Bainbridge, raising $6,870 in three weeks.

Finally, fifth graders put both their hearts and their minds to work on the budget. They selected nine BOSIA programs to fund, including university scholarships, library books, equipment and workshops for blind students and deaf students and a weekend ambulance driver’s salary. As a result of the project, kids developed empathy for others and put their hard work into a real-world philanthropic project.
