Our Mission
At The Island School we educate each of our children; we nourish their innate curiosity, inspire a lifelong enthusiasm for learning, and foster respect and appreciation for themselves and others.
Dear Families and Friends of The Island School,
When I reflect on the 2019-2020 school year, I think of it like a play with two acts.
In Act I we enjoyed many of the traditions and rituals that mark an Island School education focused on learning by doing - Monday Morning Sing, Market Day, Science Fair, Social Justice Forum, field trips and service projects. Our days together were joy-filled even if we were not celebrating a special event.
Then, in Act II, COVID-19 hit and the governor closed schools. Our faculty rose to the challenge of shifting to distance learning in the matter of just a few days, providing all of our programming online. For an intentionally low-tech school, I felt such pride at the efforts of our creative and collaborative staff to continue providing students with the chance to learn by doing even from a distance. The adults in our community (teachers, parents and volunteers) worked to make sure that children continued to connect with friends while also keeping learning creative and fun. Kids made videos of their “wax museum” characters, created obstacle courses, organized a school-wide talent show and developed a Paved with Gold book. We provided all-school celebrations, class meetings, small group learning experiences and individual check-ins.
Over the course of the school year, students tried and failed, tried and succeeded, persevered and grew.
Thank you for continuing to support The Island School through the “typical times” and challenging ones. Our mission continues to flourish in this generation of children whether we are together or far apart.
Gratefully,
Amanda Ward
Head of School
2019-2020 Success Story
Island Schoolers developed their social-emotional skills as resilient, caring and active citizens of our community.

As part of their social-emotional education, students explored themes of social justice and empathy with their classmates. Students reflected on their own empathy and were encouraged to “climb inside” the perspective of someone else “and walk around in it.”
Every winter we plan an event to honor the memory of Martin Luther King, Jr. focused on the Civil Rights Movement. This year we broadened our theme and held a Social Justice Forum to share what we learned with our greater community.
Kindergarteners and first graders had the opportunity to think about the similarities and differences between themselves and others as well as how to demonstrate kindness. Our second graders took on the roles of characters in a play to better understand the perspective of others. Third graders shared their knowledge in a play based on the experiences of the Coast Salish peoples during times of westward expansion. And our fourth and fifth graders each researched a topic of importance to them that exposed an injustice, and at times, even a privilege that they took for granted. They prepared persuasive exhibits and action plans to create positive change in addressing that injustice.
We rounded out the Forum by singing songs from the Civil Rights Movement and displaying student art with peace and unity themes. Preparing and performing at the Forum boosted students’ empathy for others and taught them how to develop solutions for real-world problems.
